Role Purpose

To analyse, search, confirm or establish the identity of all incoming prisoner fingerprints including coding and screening of prisoner footwear, crime scene impressions and to detect crime by means of searching and identifying the perpetrators of crime using Visual ID technology.

Role Accountabilities

Analyse, compare and evaluate crime scene footwear marks against other crime scene marks.

Analyse, compare and evaluate crime scene footwear marks against reference collections and prisoner footwear.

Undertake initial determination of casework, to include range from ‘no further work’ to preparation of Screening Reports.

Prepare footwear comparison ‘Preliminary Reports for Charge’, subject to peer review by Footwear SME.

Under direction undertake recovery and development of finger/palm and plantar impressions from deceased victims of crime and unidentified bodies, in order to establish identity or eliminate.

Conduct quality assurance checks on crime scene finger/ footwear impressions and prisoner footwear impressions, providing feedback to all customers, maintaining standards of evidence recovery and submission.

Analyse, compare and evaluate crime scene fingerprint marks against tenprints.

Analyse, compare and evaluate crime scene fingerprint marks against crime scene fingerprint marks.

Analyse, compare and evaluate tenprints against crime scene fingerprint marks.

Analyse, compare, evaluate and verify tenprint against tenprints.

Develop and maintain professional knowledge and practice in accordance with ISO 17025 statutory requirements.

Conduct training and awareness sessions for Police Staff, Officers and outside agencies in all aspects of visual identification, footwear and fingerprints.

Qualifications

Education

Educated to level 3 or equivalent experience in a science related subject plus educated to level 2 in Maths and English
Scale 5:

Successful completion of the National College of Policing tenprint and ident 1 training course.
Successfully completion of National College of Policing Footwear Specialist Training Programme: Modules 1 and 2, Footwear Mark Coding and Intelligence Evidence Portfolio.
Must be able to successfully complete National College of Policing Footwear Specialist Training Programme: Module 3 Footwear Mark screening.
Must be able to successfully complete the National College of Policing Intermediate fingerprint course (crime scene marks).

Scale 6:

Successful completion of National College of Policing Footwear Specialist Training Programme: up to Module 4 Footwear Mark screening Portfolio.
Successful completion of ISO 17025 in house training and assessment, to provide footwear comparison strength of evidence in a preliminary report.

Experience

Some experience of footwear mark coding or some experience of tenprint work.
Some experience of Photoshop or AVIS would be beneficial
Some experience working in a research field involving active investigation having previously worked in an operational capacity either within a police force or a forensic service provider.
Minimum 12 months previous experience of working within a scientific related filed in an operational capacity, either with a police force or a forensic discipline.
Experience working within Ten Print or footwear mark coding roles would be desirable.
