Forensic Investigator

The Districts 5 & 24 Medical Examiner’s Office is seeking applicants for consideration for the position of Forensic Investigator. The office is a free-standing, N.A.M.E.-accredited, facility based in Leesburg, Florida that investigates deaths in a six county jurisdiction that includes Lake, Marion, Citrus, Hernando, Sumter, and Seminole Counties. This is a private agency that contracts with the counties that it serves. The position involves all aspects of medicolegal death investigation. The Forensic Investigators working in this office are responsible for a wide variety of death investigation duties, including responding to and conducting scene investigations, obtaining critical information, preparing professionally written and detailed reports, scene documentation, scene photography, and screening cases for the determination of Medical Examiner jurisdiction. The Forensic Investigators interact with multiple law enforcement agencies, hospitals, government agencies, attorneys, funeral homes, families of the deceased, and the general public.

This is a full time, non-exempt position with an on-call rotating schedule inclusive of nights, weekends, and holidays.  The position offers an attractive benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, paid vacation and holidays, a 401K retirement plan and continuing education opportunities. The starting salary for a Forensic Investigator is $40,000.

Qualified candidates will have a degree in forensic science, biology, or a closely related field from a post secondary institution recognized by a national educational accrediting agency. Preference will be given to those candidates that have prior investigative experience working within a Medical Examiner’s Office and possess knowledge of medical terminology. Qualified applicants must have a good driving record, pass pre-employment drug screen, background checks, and be able to lift 150 lbs. All applicants must live or be willing to relocate to their coverage area within one month of accepting a job offer.

The position requires the ability to handle stressful situations, strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills, initiative, independent judgment, and good decision making abilities. Basic computer skills and the ability to multitask are also a requirement.
