To be responsible for the analysis of trace levels of inorganic gunshot residue, using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), following instructions as set by the reporting scientist. If requested, this may require production of a suitable witness statement or equivalent, and attendance at Courts of Law.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
To include, but not limited to:
Analysis of trace material, as generated during item examinations, using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Validation research projects to be undertaken/ project managed, including production of compliance reports for accreditation.
Producing and assessing generated results for use in forensic cases.
Carry out analysis as per standard operating procedures to required timescales.
Adhere to all aspects of customer protocols and the EFS Quality Manual.
Be responsible for the integrity and continuity of exhibits.
Communicate with other scientists as appropriate throughout the lifetime of a case.
Responsibility for individual daily time booking on the EFS case management system.
Must have previous experience using electron microscopy and/or demonstrable, expansive technical knowledge of gunshot residue (preferably, inorganic components) and its analysis.
Good written and oral communication skills are essential in this role.
Previous experience in a busy and demanding working environment, in a scientific capacity.
A recognised qualification in a science-based degree (chemistry, analytical sciences, forensic science).
An expansive and demonstrable understanding of other forensic techniques and analysis utilised within the M&T team.
Demonstrate ownership of issues that arise day to day, only escalating when necessary to the Casework Team Lead.
Display patience, determination, attention to detail and integrity at all times.
Exhibit high levels of concentration, accuracy and reliability.
Ability to explain complex scientific concepts or procedures to non-scientists (verbally or non-verbally).
Able to handle a flexible workload; show good organisational skills and high levels of personal resilience with the ability to work to deadlines under pressure.
Communicate and work co-operatively with others, focussing on a collective rather than individual goal.
Demonstrate initiative, adopting a pro-active attitude to continuous improvement.
The role may be required to participate in any requirement for shift working and/or weekend rota cover (in office or on call) as business needs dictate, either on the basis of hours which are additional to the standard week or by rostering. Where this is required, appropriate rota payments will be made.
Due to the highly sensitive nature of the work, applicants should note that security clearance is required for this role. To gain security clearance you must have three years continuous residency in the UK. Criminal convictions may prevent you from gaining security clearance. In addition, this role will in require alcohol/drug screening.
