The Visual Evidence Review has significantly changed the way visual evidence is handled within the force. These changes will make new and enhanced capabilities available to the force throughout 2021. As a result, this opportunity has arisen to join the Visual Evidence Unit (VEU) in this exciting period of transition, adapting to new technologies and systems, and delivering new products to the force.
The Visual Evidence Technician provides dedicated and diligent support to Investigative staff by ensuring, Visual & Audio evidence is retrieved in a Forensic manner and prepared for viewing, appropriate equipment and software is available and exhibits are entered into the evidential chain retaining their forensic integrity. The role is vital to the successful delivery of the team and offers varied and challenging work.
The primary role is retrieving, recovering, ingesting, copying and readying digital media evidence, including CCTV, in support of criminal and civil investigations.
Providing on scene support and guidance to operational case teams in relation to CCTV, audio, photography & video recovery.
Taking receipt of and recording exhibits and overseeing the management, allocation & reformatting of storage media.
Providing written evidence in support of Criminal, Civil and Tribunal investigations.
Detailed knowledge of video and CCTV components and the image-quality issues associated with different methods of transcoding between formats.
Formal training in audio-visual forensics or significant proven experience in this field and a willingness to undertake this training.
Understanding of the criminal justice system including evidence handling and court presentation.
Full UK driving licence
Ability and willingness to assist out of hours as required.
Working knowledge of the National Intelligence Model, Merpol CCTV & Digital Images Policy, Human Rights and the Investigatory Power Act (IPA) to ensure that authorisations and practices are being adhered to under relevant legislation and standards including The Criminal Procedure Investigation Act and Surveillance Camera Commissioners Code of Practice
Degree or degree-level qualification in an audio-visual related field or significant proven experience in a digital multimedia environment.
Experience of CCTV, video, still image or audio processing to a forensic or professional standard.
Knowledge or experience in the various methodologies of retrieving, processing, and production of evidential data in a digital forensic manner. A working knowledge of Core Investigative Doctrine and MIRSAP procedures.
PST (Personal Safety Training) including working at heights.
Knowledge and understanding of ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17020 quality standards and how they apply to audio-visual forensic work.
Knowledge and experience of forensic tools available for the transcoding of video formats, and the impact of these on image quality and evidential integrity.
Ability to identify potential faults on CCTV systems (analogue and IP-based), and an understanding of how to approach forensic recovery from these devices.
