The Research, Technology, and Evaluation Program in RTI’s Center for Forensic Sciences is seeking a Forensic Scientist to provide input and guide research tasks across multiple forensic disciplines, with an emphasis on forensic DNA analysis projects. The successful candidate will use his or her expertise to ensure established theories, concepts, and techniques are being employed on funded research projects, both internal to RTI and by subcontractors tasked with specific forensic projects. The Center for Forensic Sciences is involved in cutting edge forensic efforts which help guide laboratory practitioners, law enforcement agencies, and policy makers. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of forensic experts crossing all disciplines and may be expected to contribute to laboratory and technical work, evaluations, publications, presentations, and professional meetings.
Duties to include, but not be limited to;
Assist with the design of projects in a strategic manner that leverages and extends the collective knowledge of the team and their respective analytical skills.
Contribute to project reviews, presentations, and publications.
Perform research and evaluation in the forensic sciences for federal agencies as well as other RTI centers and clients.
Apply and interpret standard scientific theories, concepts and techniques as they pertain to forensic DNA analysis. This will include the ability to apply theories of probabilistic genotyping to complex DNA mixtures.
Search peer-reviewed literature, understand concepts of experimental tests and/or evaluations, and possess the ability to collect, analyze and summarize data with strong writing skills.
Develop preliminary findings for review and public dissemination through online tools and/or through the peer-review process.
Assist with developing solutions to problems where established theories and techniques can be identified, and some precedents exist using familiar processes to complete work assignments.
Communicate regularly with RTI leadership, keeping them informed of progress and any issues or problems that arise.
Provide input in the design of experiments and analyses.
Gather background information and other documentation to support marketing and business development activities.
Assist RTI leadership in identifying ways to enhance or expand existing projects and to develop new project opportunities.
Maintain a strong customer focus and explore opportunities for innovation (i.e. exploring/evaluating existing and new technologies) in day-to-day research activities.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s level degree in a related discipline in the natural sciences
1+ year of related experience in the Forensic Science field; OR a Master’s level degree in a related discipline in lieu of experience.
Degree focus in the biological sciences, and more specifically in forensic genetics.
Knowledge of how to analyze, interpret, and present data pertaining to complex DNA mixtures
Knowledge of statistical frameworks (match probability models, likelihood ratios, paternity, kinship, and general Bayesian approaches) as they pertain to the forensic sciences
Experience with one or more probabilistic genotyping systems
Experience with statistical software packages
Work experience in a forensic laboratory
